Los Grados del Curandero by Pablo Amaringo

The concentric wheels in the centre correspond to the levels of esoteric knowledge of a curandero: beginning from the outside they are onaya, banco puma, muraya, sumiruna and the innermost banco sumi. The wheels also represent the varied levels of higher consciousness that drinkers of ayahuasca strive for. Below the red puca lupuna tree on the left is a chullachaqui riding a giant charapa or turtle. The chullachaqui is a mischievous gnome-like being who protects the animals of the rainforest.

The picture is intended for meditation and contemplation of inner peace and harmony. When you look in the centre, you should not blink or glance away; this process purifies your mind and reveals your spiritual light.

Illustrating the evolution of his intricate and colorful art, this book contains 48 full-color reproductions of Amaringo’s latest works with detailed explorations of the rich Amazonian mythology underlying each painting. Through their longstanding relationship with Amaringo, coauthors Charing and Cloudsley are able to share the personal stories behind his visions and experiences with Amazonian people and folklore, capturing Amaringo’s powerful ecological and spiritual message through his art and words.

With contributions by Graham Hancock, Jeremy Narby, Robert Venosa, Dennis McKenna, Stephan Beyer, and Jan Kounen, this book brings the ayahuasca experience to life as we travel on Amaringo’s visionary brush and palette.
